Chain Dancers is a collection of 5,000 hooded dancers on Robinhood Chain where every NFT is tied to its own unique, non copyrighted soundtrack, and where a single token, $MUSIC, keeps the records coming long after mint day.

01 / THE PROBLEM WITH MUSIC AND NFTS

Almost every music NFT ever sold has the same defect: the buyer does not own the music. The song is a licensed recording, or a sample pack stitched together, or a file sitting on somebody's server with a copyright that belongs to somebody else. The token points at the music. It never contains it, and it never owns it.

Even the honest projects can only sell you a license. Licenses expire, servers go dark, and the artist's label can knock on your door years later. If the whole point of a token is ownership, music NFTs have been selling the one thing they cannot deliver.

Chain Dancers starts from the other end: what if the music was born owned?

02 / MUSIC WITH NO AUTHOR BUT THE CHAIN

Every Dancer's soundtrack is composed by a deterministic engine from one input: the token id. The id rolls a genre from six schools, Lo-Fi, House, Synthwave, Ambient, Funk and Trap. It sets the tempo inside that genre's honest range. It picks one of twelve keys, a scale, a chord progression, a 16 step melody, a bassline, the drum pattern, even the track's name.

Then the track is synthesized live, every time, from raw oscillators, filters and noise. There are no recordings. There are no samples. There is no stem lifted from anywhere, because there is nowhere to lift from: the waveform is computed in front of you each time you press play.

Music that no human wrote has no author to claim it. Nothing is borrowed, so nothing can be taken back. That is what non copyrighted means here: not music with a generous license, but music with no license to need.

THE SAME ID ALWAYS SINGS THE SAME SONG. DANCER #7 HAS PLAYED IN C MINOR AT 105 BPM SINCE THE MOMENT IT EXISTED, AND IT WILL PLAY THAT FOREVER.

03 / THE DANCERS

The figure is a spirit dancer: a turban wrap with a knotted ribbon streaming off frame, a pure black void where the face should be, closed crescent eyes lost in the music, and the signature gold chain worn as a diagonal sash through a ring pendant. 5,000 exist. Across nine layers, wraps, backdrops, gazes, eye colours, headpieces, sashes, auras, metals and sparkles, the collection carries85 distinct trait values, every one of them drawn to read cleanly at 28 pixels. Every 101st Dancer past the team batch wears the golden wrap: 48 in total.

04 / $MUSIC: THE CURRENCY OF THE FLOOR

One token runs everything. $MUSIC is bought at the booth with ETH, and burned for everything that matters:

  • MINT. Burning $MUSIC is the only way to mint a Dancer. No allowlist games, no free list: every Dancer is paid for and the payment is destroyed.
  • PRESS B-SIDES. After mint, burning $MUSIC presses a new track for a Dancer you own: a fresh genre, key, tempo and melody, added to that Dancer's crate alongside its debut record. Your Dancer grows from a single into an album.
  • WHAT COMES AFTER. The same burn rail stays open for future pressings: remix windows, collab records between two Dancers, seasonal drops. If it makes sound, it costs $MUSIC.

Every use is a burn. The floor only ever consumes its currency, which means the people holding $MUSIC are the ones deciding what new music gets to exist.

The phase boundaries are constants in the contract and cannot be moved. A batch that crosses a boundary pays each Dancer at its own phase price, so nobody buys later stock at an earlier price. Records are priced separately, from 4,000 $MUSIC for a Lo-Fi pressing to 20,000 for one of the 111 Midnight cuts.

The engine that draws the art and the engine that writes the music are the same kind of machine: deterministic code that turns an id into something you can see and hear.
